Around 1941, a variety of citizens from northern California and southwest Oregon petitioned the idea of a separate state because they believed that their rural region was undrepresented. According to The Oregon Encyclopedia, a project of the Oregon Historical Society, these individuals, "publicity-seeking 'secession' movement gathered steam to form a forty-ninth state, the State of Jefferson." Still today, residents of northern-most California and southwestern Oregon still support the State of Jefferson movement.
